What is a smart meter?

Smart meters are an exciting new type of energy meter that will help you save time, energy and money.

The smart meter roll out has already started. All energy suppliers in the UK (including us) are fitting them between now and 2020.

You'll be able to get an electricity smart meter and a gas smart meter to replace your existing meters, depending on the fuels you use.

The best news is we'll install your smart meter(s) at no extra cost.

Why should I get a smart meter?

Smart Energy Tracker
  • Smart meters send us meter readings automatically, so you won't need to do it yourself. It also means your account will always be up-to-date, so we shouldn't need to send you any more estimated bills.
  • Getting smart meter(s) will make it easier for you to save energy and money. This is because you'll be able to keep track of the amount you're using through a handheld Smart Energy Tracker.
  • You can use your Smart Energy Tracker to set energy efficiency targets, and get the whole household involved in energy saving.

What our customers say

  • Bill, Sheffield

"I am able to monitor my energy use and see where my money is going. Not having meter readings taken manually is also a big advantage, as mine are not easy to access."

  • Caroline, Leeds

"I can check how much it's going to cost me before I get my bill and use my savings for other things. I haven't had to compromise and have easily found ways to save energy."

  • Peter, Mountain Ash

"I have cut down on what I spend by being more careful, without having to deprive myself. It's amazing to see your energy use displayed in front of your very eyes when you turn an appliance off and on."

How do smart meters work?

Like traditional energy meters, smart meters measure how much gas and electricity you’re using. They take readings up to every half-hour and send them to us automatically.

This means we shouldn’t need to estimate your bills.

Your Smart Energy Tracker will take information from your smart meter(s) every half-hour for gas, and every 10 seconds for electricity. It’ll use this to show you how much you’re using and how much it’s costing you.
