  • Different meter types

  • We've put together some information on the most common meter types and the homes they are best suited to.

You can also find out how to read your meter and how to let us know your meter reading. Accurate meter readings help to ensure you only pay for what you use. If you have any questions about your meter or how it works, please contact us and we'll be happy to help.

  • If you have gas or oil-fired central heating

    What is Domestic Standard?

Domestic Standard meters are ideal if your home has gas or oil-fired heating. The meter records all the electricity you’ve used at a single rate. They’re also available as a pay as you go meter.

  • If you have all electric heating

    What is Economy 7?

Economy 7 meters are ideal if your home has electric heating. Ideally, they’re used with storage heaters and water immersion heating.

These meters have two readings, a ‘day ‘or ‘normal’ reading and a ‘night’ or ‘low’ reading. The meter records the night rate usage between 11:30pm and 6:30am in the winter and 12:30am to 7:30am in the summer (this can vary slightly depending on where you live).

Storage heaters usually charge automatically during the ‘night’ or ‘low’ usage times, which means you can use timers for things like dishwashers and tumble dryers.  They’re also available as a pay as you go meter.

  • If you have a different type of meter

What if I have a different kind of meter?

You may have an older meter type which we haven’t mentioned here. A lot of these older meters have their own tariffs or plans which were created just for that type of meter. Most of these older meter types involve more than one meter; one to record your general electricity usage and another to record your heating.

These meters aren’t available if you’re a new customer, but we still honour these ‘preserved’ meter plans if the meters are already in place in your home.

If you’re not sure what type of meter or plan you have, then contact us and we’ll let you know.
